Modesty is Classy

While there are many characteristics that a classy woman embodies, I think we all can agree that being modest is one of them. Nobody likes a braggart or someone who parades around flaunting what they have from their killer legs to their 7 figure bank account balance. There is absolutely nothing wrong with working hard and ultimately obtaining financial success or in putting in numerous hours at the gym to create a beautiful physique and enjoying the rewards of both. It's when we intentionally flash it in another person's face that it becomes distasteful, off-putting and downright obnoxious at times. Having said that, even if we're not deliberately parading around, it's still important to always be aware and err on the conservative side.

I was recently watching a reality TV show that follows the lives of a few ladies and although I'm not usually a huge fan of what I refer to as mindless television (easy watching at the end of a long day that doesn't require critical thinking or anything too heavy), I still get a laugh and find elements from such shows that inspire my writing. These supposed successful ladies all vary in their backgrounds but they have one thing in common: wealth, an affluent lifestyle and they all happen to live in the same city. I watched as one woman felt the need to constantly remind everyone around her about her past career titles, accomplishments and in an effort to make herself relevant today (which actually just revealed her insecurities), she would not stop repeating herself and talking about her current business ventures and the company to which she is building, much to the dismay of those around her who have heard it all one too many times. To make matters worse, she is a name dropper. Aside from this thought, she actually seems like a fun, outgoing woman and kind friend so it's rather unfortunate that this lack of humility has tarnished her reputation and negatively impacts how others regard her.

There is a certain confidence that every classy woman possesses which allows her to be content with modesty and be herself so there is no need to show off or try to get the attention of others, especially men . Does she feel 100% self-assured in every single situation in life? Of course not. We all have fears, doubts and sometimes nerves that get the best of us, she is aware of her areas for improvement as well as her limitations. How we choose to channel those emotions and project them into the world though makes a big difference in how we are perceived. More than just perception, we want to truly live a life of authenticity and contentment both on the inside as well as the outside. What sense is there in appearing confident to others when you are in fact a self-sabotaging, self-ridiculing, person who doesn't like herself and lacks true confidence an inner peace? In my last post, I wrote on How to Love Yourself. This is key in becoming a confident woman and only when were are first confident in who we are can we truly be modest and humble. There is no need to boast to seek approval from those around us.

For me, there is nothing more attractive than when someone is completely authentic and just at ease. I love meeting someone and learning a bit about them but never once hearing the aforementioned bragging of their life in any way and then later on in time I learn a lot of really neat facts that are so share-worthy but to them it's not necessary because they are centered within themselves and don't need others to validate who they are by what they possess. We have neighbors down the street (an older, retired couple) whom I found out a couple years ago are millionaires. I never would have guessed in a hundred years. It wasn't until my husband befriended them (seeing them while he was outside reading or doing a bit of yard work and they would walk their dog daily and pass our house) and eventually they got talking about life and business also, that's when he learned about what businesses they were involved in and more about their family life, etc. They live in a modest home, drive average cars, don't dress in fancy clothing and are the sweetest couple-totally relatable. Women who are humble make others around them feel comfortable, which at the end of the day is what good manners are all about.

If you're looking for ways to dress more modestly yet stylish, you can take a peek at my last few fashion posts. See some great pieces and looks here, here, here and here.

In what ways do you make an effort to live a more modest life?

Classy Forth of July Outfit Inspiration

RE-CREATE THIS LOOK:

BLAZER: here + similar ON SALE!  // DRESS SHIRT:  here(sleeveless version)
WHITE DENIM: perfect pair here // BELT: (sold out) similar here + here
SCARF: (sold out) similar options: here + here and here // Bracelets
SHOE OPTIONS: here (under $35!), here, here and here  // BAG OPTIONS: herehere

I hope you're all excited for the long weekend festivities! What I love most about this holiday is that BY this point, summer is in full swing and there are so many fun options whether it's a backyard BBQ, a day at the beach or catching up with friends/family during a weekend away to celebrate this country's Independence. It's also a great excuse to look cute wearing some red, white and blue!

I'm a huge fan of white denim for summer, it's so chic and pairs well with many tops and can easily be dressed up or down. As a blazer lover, I can tell you that a classic one in navy is so versatile and adds such a polished look. This White House Black Market-inspired ensemble is the epitome of a classy July.4th outfit in my opinion. Although the blazer is dark denim, a more relaxed fabric, if you feel it would be a wee bit too dressy for a casual BBQ or family outing (in which case this navy tee along with these fringe + tassel sandals OR these strappy espadrille wedges would be the perfect complement to dress it down and still maintain the same color theme). In some cases, it could also make for an ideal casual Friday look if your workplace allows for that.

Living in Florida, it's not so practical for me to wear pants during the daytime in July (I was used to 70-85 degree summer days in Toronto) and by May and June here the thermometer shoots up well past 100 for weeks at a time, so denim and pants are generally an evening-only option. With so many of my readers living in other states that aren't quite so hot, I wanted to share this preppy and patriotic look. By changing out or eliminating the scarf and belt it can be worn over and over again with other great colors too such as a yellow clutch, Kelly green tee or even a hot pink blouse.

....

Here are some of my favorite red, white & blue dresses and more for the 4th and beyond:

If you follow our Facebook community then you may have seen me share 'the one + only hairstyle you'll need this 4th of July weekend'! It's the perfect fuss-free solution to beating the heat and still looking stylish. If you haven't seen it, you'll want to take a peek here as I linked to the step-by-step guide to recreate the look which can be worn with any outfit.

With Paul away for work, it's just us girls for the holiday weekend so we're heading to our favorite park for a picnic followed by fireworks in the Disney area at night. I'll definitely be doing a little online shopping later today while Lily takes her afternoon nap as Ann Taylor is currently running a sale for an extra 60% OFF their sale styles AND 40% OFF full price styles through 07/04 w/ code: JULY40  and White House/ Black Market has it's very 1st semi-annual sale up to 40% OFF both marked down and select full price styles using code: 62787 right now also!! One last sale to note, if you love this classic polished style for work or weekend wear, this site (which has always been a personal favorite for professional clothing) is having a 50-70% OFF right now also and you won't want to miss it!

Manners Monday: How to Support a Cause With Tact and Grace

I hope you're all having a wonderful start to your week. For today's Manners Monday post, we're talking about a topic that I haven't touched on before: how to graciously go about supporting a cause with tact and grace. Oftentimes, we become so fired up about our favorite cause that it can be easy to go overboard and bombard someone with all of that passion! Just because we've adopted a newly energizing vegan diet or have taken a stance against disposable diapering or wearing fur, it doesn't mean that everyone around us shares our same viewpoint. I do believe that at the end of the day most people are just doing the best that they can in life to make the best decisions they know how to make with the resources afforded to them. Can we all do better? Of course we can. Education leads to change. We can all benefit from new information, facts and an open mind when it comes to worldly topics that affect us all in the greater scheme of things. What I see on social media when it comes to religion, politics, the debate of pro or anti-vaccination, genetically modified foods vs. organic (the list could go on here!), is that when one is behind the anonymity of their laptop or they are not required to be physically face-to-face with another person, words are typed, feelings get hurt and more often than not belittling takes place, brash words are spoken and a lot of people get heated up, alienating others along the way.

We all have our own opinions, values, convictions and causes which may sometimes differ greatly from others. However, it's important to remember that tearing another down because of a choice they've made which doesn't fall in line with our own lifestyle is just not becoming of  a lady.

As someone who holds many causes near and dear to her heart, I always ask myself how I'd like to be treated or how I'd like to receive information. At one point in time, we didn't know what we do today about the very causes we support. Everything in life involves a learning curve. I've been extremely aware of chemical ingredients only choosing natural and organic for many years, my cousin on the other hand admitted recently that she was oblivious to it all-cleaning products, makeup, sunscreen, food, etc., but thanks to a new business she is now a part of, her eyes have been opened. My point is, when we are gentle with people, allowing them the time to figure things out in their own timing and become more aware, they will. Just because we don't agree with someone's lifestyle and choices doesn't give us the right to belittle them, judge them or badger them as this is bullying bordering on harassment. It's not our job to fix or change anyone, all we can do is commit to our own personal growth. This isn't to say that we shouldn't bring up controversial topics in conversation but just tread lightly and be aware of someone's feelings as to not hurt or embarrass them in the process.

Sometimes we feel compelled to share information to help others because we care so much about them that we want it so badly for them to 'get it'. What I've found to be a non-threatening way of conveying information gently is to share from my own experiences. An example of this (that has come up a few times among friends and acquaintances) is sharing about how I noweat very little meat because I've learned that livestock is a major source of CO2 pollution and the animals are often treated poorly and live in unclean conditions. While I don't eliminate it completely, my alternative is organic, grass fed beef knowing the animals are treated in a much more kind and humane way and they are not consuming genetically modified ingredients and being pumped with hormones/antibiotics. When things are presented in a way in which people understand that they have alternatives and hear how you've changed your own ways and why, that makes it much more palatable. You may not convince them to adopt new ways immediately but the seed has been planted and after that it is up to them if it is of interest to them.

Another approach is to provide literature or website links that provide more information that someone can read at their own leisure. If you have a sample of a really great natural sweetener or a healthier product that tastes great, why not share it with a friend so they can enjoy it when they like. For me, what I mentioned above and  the reason for the way I eat has evolved over many years and was due to a booth I visited for 'Mercy for Animals' at a local Vegetarian Fest in one of our favorite local parks who are advocates for farmed animals. Holding their magazine and seeing heartbreaking images and speaking to the knowledgeable staff of the organization helped me to learn new things I didn't know before and let's face it, visuals can be powerful. This same magazine that shared gripping photos also provided great vegan and vegetarian recipes, I loved those positive options. I've always loves animals but since that time I felt a greater sense of compassion towards all creatures including farmed animals who are treated as a commodity.

When I was younger I would get pretty amped up about things I was passionate about, over time though I've learned how to soften and refine my approach knowing that kindness and grace wins every time.

Now, I'd love to hear from you! How do you share your causes with others gently to encourage change?

Classy Fashion Favorites for May

Every month I have so much fun putting together my favorite pieces for my Classy Woman Fashion Favorites posts. It's essentially a gigantic wish list for me filled with pieces I adore which range from sophisticated looks for a wedding, tasteful swimwear for the beach or poolside, comfortable yet stylish weekend wear, a few of my favorite beauty products that I am currently using and classic accessories that are on trend which I love and I know you will too.

For May, I'm all about pops of color, florals, delicate fabrics such as lace, ruffles and in case you couldn't tell-peplum! Lily and I both have several peplum tops, I think it adds so much more to a pair of shorts or jeans than just a plain tee and the layered look via a hem/ruffle is quite popular right now. I'm starting to put together the next post for June. In addition to fashion pieces, I've been working really hard on some room designs for my interior design clients and I look forward to sharing similar posts with my favorite home decor pieces along with the overall room inspirations.

You can shop this post by clicking on any of the images in the boutique above and you'll be taken straight to the source and as always, I'm sharing the best sales taking place right now so you can stretch your spring wardrobe budget.
